How to Change Your Wi-Fi Password Safely

Changing the wireless password is one of the most useful steps you can take after installing a router, sharing the network with too many people or noticing an unfamiliar device. The process is usually straightforward, but it temporarily disconnects every wireless client and can create avoidable problems when cameras, printers or smart-home devices are forgotten.

Take a few minutes to identify the network you are about to change. Write down the current Wi-Fi name, note whether the router broadcasts separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, and make a list of devices that must reconnect. Keep at least one computer connected by Ethernet when possible. A wired connection prevents the settings page from disappearing as soon as the wireless password is saved.

Wi-Fi password and router password are different

The Wi-Fi password allows a phone, computer or television to join the wireless network. The router administrator password protects the settings page. They may look similar, but changing one does not normally change the other.

A router can also have an account password for a manufacturer application or cloud service. That account is separate again. Before editing anything, confirm that you are signed in to the local router interface and that the field you are changing belongs to the wireless network rather than the administrator account.

Find the router administration address

Connect to the router and enter its local gateway address in a browser. Common addresses include 192.168.1.1, 192.168.0.1, 10.0.0.1 and 192.168.178.1. The correct value is the default gateway currently assigned to your device, not simply the most popular address.

When the address is unknown, follow the router IP guide. Some brands also support a local hostname or an application, but the gateway remains the most reliable starting point on a configured network.

Step-by-step: change the Wi-Fi password

  1. Connect to the main network. Avoid guest Wi-Fi because it may block access to the router.
  2. Open the local admin page. Type the gateway directly into the address bar rather than a search engine.
  3. Sign in with authorised administrator credentials. Check the device label, setup record or password manager.
  4. Open the wireless settings. Menu names include Wi-Fi, Wireless, WLAN, Network, Radio or Basic Settings.
  5. Select the correct band or network. The router may show one combined SSID or separate 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and 6 GHz entries.
  6. Choose the security mode. Use WPA2-Personal, WPA3-Personal or a supported transition mode for mixed devices. Avoid WEP and open security.
  7. Enter a new password. Use a long, unique phrase that is not reused for email, banking or the router administrator account.
  8. Save or apply the change. The wireless connection may drop immediately.
  9. Reconnect devices. Forget the old network profile when a client repeatedly reports an incorrect password.

How to choose a strong Wi-Fi password

A good wireless password is long enough to resist guessing, unique to the network and practical to enter on televisions or smart devices. A sequence of unrelated words with numbers or punctuation can be easier to manage than a short, complicated string. Avoid names, addresses, telephone numbers, router models and predictable patterns.

Do not reuse the administrator password. Visitors who receive the Wi-Fi key should not automatically gain access to router settings. For guests, create a separate guest network rather than repeatedly sharing the main household password.

WPA2, WPA3 and compatibility

WPA3 offers stronger modern protection on compatible equipment. WPA2 remains widely supported and is appropriate when older devices cannot join WPA3. Some routers provide a WPA2/WPA3 transition mode that allows a mixture of clients.

After changing security mode, test important devices before assuming the password is wrong. An older printer or camera may understand the new password but not the selected encryption mode. In that situation, place legacy equipment on a compatible isolated network rather than weakening security for every device.

One Wi-Fi name or separate bands?

Routers often combine 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and sometimes 6 GHz under one network name. The router and client then select an appropriate band. This is convenient for most homes and works well with mesh systems.

Separate names can help during troubleshooting or when a device supports only 2.4 GHz. They also make it easier to test range and speed. The disadvantage is that users may remain connected to the wrong band as they move around the home. Do not split bands only because a speed test is temporarily slow; first check signal strength, channel congestion and router placement.

Reconnect phones, computers and televisions

Most devices display a password prompt after the router saves the change. When a device keeps trying the old credential, open its Wi-Fi settings, forget the network and join again. Verify spelling, capitalisation and punctuation.

For televisions, consoles and streaming devices, use the on-screen network setup menu. Avoid copying a password from a screen that silently adds spaces. A QR code can simplify phone setup, but confirm that it contains the new network details before sharing it.

Reconnect printers, cameras and smart-home devices

Devices without a full keyboard often need to be placed in setup or pairing mode. Open the manufacturer's application, select the existing device and look for a network-change option. Some products must be removed and added again.

Many smart devices support only 2.4 GHz. If pairing fails on a combined network, temporarily use a separate 2.4 GHz SSID or follow the manufacturer's recommended onboarding method. Do not factory-reset every device until you confirm that the problem is not simply the wrong band or security mode.

Update mesh nodes and wireless extenders

Mesh nodes managed by a central controller usually receive the new wireless settings automatically. Standalone repeaters may retain the old upstream password and lose their connection. Sign in to the repeater, run its setup process again or reconnect it using the supported application.

After changing the password, verify that each node reports a healthy backhaul. A node can continue broadcasting its own network even when it is no longer connected to the main router.

Change the guest network password separately

The guest network normally has its own SSID and password. Changing the main network does not always update it. Review guest settings, choose a different credential and disable access to local devices unless visitors genuinely need it.

For short-term guests, some routers support automatic expiration, access schedules or QR sharing. These features are safer than revealing the main household password.

What to do when the new password does not work

Check the network name

Homes with extenders, mesh nodes or nearby routers can have similar names. Confirm that the device is joining the exact SSID you changed.

Forget the saved network

Removing the old Wi-Fi profile clears cached security settings. Join again and enter the new credential manually.

Check security compatibility

If only older devices fail, test WPA2 or the router's documented transition mode. Do not use WEP.

Verify that the change was saved

Reconnect by Ethernet or use a device that remains online, then reopen the wireless page. Some routers require an additional Apply button or a reboot.

Check mesh and repeater configuration

A repeater broadcasting stale credentials can confuse clients. Confirm the backhaul and extended-network settings.

No internet after changing the Wi-Fi password

A Wi-Fi password controls local wireless access; it does not normally change the internet connection. When devices join successfully but show no internet, check whether the router is rebooting, the modem or ONT is online and the WAN status has returned.

If only one device has no internet, remove and recreate its Wi-Fi profile, disable a manual proxy and check whether it has a parental-control restriction. Avoid changing WAN, DNS or VLAN settings to solve a password problem unless there is separate evidence that those settings are wrong.

Should you hide the Wi-Fi name?
