Restart and factory reset are not the same
A restart turns the router off and back on while preserving its configuration. A factory reset erases customised settings and returns the device to its initial state. The two actions are often confused because both can involve a button or reboot, but their consequences are very different.
For temporary slowdowns, a frozen interface or a lost internet session, restart first. Use a factory reset only when authorised, when simpler recovery methods have failed and when you can rebuild the network afterward.
What a factory reset can erase
- Wi-Fi network names and passwords;
- router administrator accounts and passwords;
- internet connection type, PPPoE credentials and static WAN values;
- VLAN, IPTV and telephone configuration;
- DHCP reservations and custom LAN addresses;
- port forwarding, firewall and VPN settings;
- parental controls, schedules and blocked devices;
- guest networks and smart-home integration;
- mesh pairing, node names and backhaul preferences;
- DNS, QoS and traffic-priority rules.
Provider-managed gateways and fiber ONTs can contain service-specific settings that are not printed on the label. Resetting them can interrupt internet, telephone or television service.
Situations where a restart is enough
Restart before resetting when the router interface is temporarily unresponsive, a device cannot obtain an address, Wi-Fi has become unstable or the internet connection needs to renegotiate. A reboot clears temporary state without destroying the configuration.
Restart the modem or ONT first when it is separate from the router. Wait until its service indicators stabilise, then restart the router. Finally, restart affected clients if necessary.
Situations where a factory reset may help
A reset can be appropriate when the administrator password is genuinely unrecoverable, the LAN configuration was damaged, the router is being transferred to a new owner or official troubleshooting instructions specifically require it.
It is less likely to help with an ISP outage, damaged power supply, broken Ethernet cable, red optical LOS indicator, weak cellular signal or poor router placement. A reset cannot repair a physical line fault.
Before resetting: identify the equipment
Record the complete brand, model, hardware revision and provider ownership. Determine whether the box is only a router or also a modem, fiber ONT, cellular CPE, telephone gateway or mesh controller.
A reset on a simple retail router is usually easier to recover from than a reset on an ISP fiber gateway that carries internet, voice and IPTV.
Back up the router configuration
Use the administration interface's backup or export feature when available. Store the file securely because it may contain sensitive network information. Confirm that the backup is intended for the same model and firmware; configuration files are not universally portable.
Also take private notes or screenshots of:
- WAN connection type and required credentials;
- LAN IP, subnet and DHCP range;
- Wi-Fi names, security modes and passwords;
- reserved addresses and port forwards;
- DNS, VPN and remote-access configuration;
- mesh node names and physical placement;
- provider VLAN, telephone and IPTV values.
Check for password recovery first
Some routers provide a recovery link, security questions, a recovery key, a local application or an authorised cloud account. Check the device label, password manager and setup records. The Wi-Fi password saved on a connected device may also be viewable by the network owner.
Do not factory-reset solely because an old default-password list failed. The owner or ISP may have changed the credential.
How to restart a router safely
- Save any changes currently open in the admin interface.
- Use the Reboot or Restart command when available.
- Otherwise disconnect power from the router.
- Wait briefly, reconnect power and leave the device undisturbed.
- Allow broadband, fiber, cellular and mesh indicators to stabilise.
- Test one wired and one wireless device.
Avoid rapidly switching power on and off. Do not disconnect power during a firmware update.
How to factory-reset with the physical button
The exact method and hold time vary by model. Read the label and official instructions first. A typical process is:
- Keep the router powered and fully booted.
- Locate the recessed Reset button, not WPS or power.
- Press it with a non-conductive pointed object.
- Hold for the period specified by the manufacturer until the documented LEDs change.
- Release and wait for the full factory boot to complete.
Do not guess the timing. Some buttons have multiple functions depending on how long they are held.
How to reset from the admin interface
Look under System, Administration, Maintenance, Backup & Restore or Factory Defaults. A software reset is often clearer because the interface describes what will be erased. Confirm the action only after the backup and recovery plan are complete.
Resetting an ISP modem-router or fiber ONT
Contact the provider or check its documentation first. The device may depend on automatic provisioning, optical registration, PPPoE, VLAN, voice or television settings. Some gateways recover automatically; others do not.
A red LOS or optical alarm indicates a signal problem, not corrupted Wi-Fi settings. Do not reset the ONT to fix a damaged or disconnected fiber line.
Resetting a mobile 4G or 5G router
A cellular router may lose APN, SIM PIN, roaming, network mode and data-limit settings. Record the carrier profile before resetting. Confirm that the SIM is active and that the device can automatically restore the correct APN.
Resetting a mesh Wi-Fi system
Identify the primary router and child nodes. Resetting only a child normally removes it from the mesh and requires pairing again. Resetting the primary unit can erase the entire topology.
Before resetting an offline node, test power, distance, Ethernet backhaul and app status. A weak or disconnected backhaul is more common than corrupted factory settings.
What to do immediately after a factory reset
- Connect by Ethernet or the factory Wi-Fi shown on the label.
- Open the documented local setup page or official application.
- Create a unique administrator password.
- Restore the internet connection and provider settings.
- Set the LAN address and DHCP configuration.
- Create the Wi-Fi network with WPA2 or WPA3.
- Update firmware when the device is online and stable.
- Rebuild guest access, reservations, forwarding and mesh only as needed.
Should you restore the backup immediately?
A backup saves time, but it can also restore the setting that caused the problem. When the reset was performed to diagnose a corrupted configuration, complete a minimal clean setup first and test stability. Restore the backup only when it is compatible and the previous configuration is trusted.
Router does not respond after reset
Wait longer than an ordinary reboot because first startup can take several minutes. Connect directly by Ethernet, return the computer to automatic DHCP and check the factory address on the label. Disable VPN and mobile data while testing.
If no lights appear, the device repeatedly restarts or the factory page never becomes reachable, check the power adapter and official recovery procedure. Do not upload random firmware.
Internet does not return after reset
Check whether the WAN page has an address and whether the connection requires PPPoE, VLAN or static values. For cable service, restart the modem and wait for it to register before connecting the router. For fiber and voice gateways, contact the provider when provisioning does not return.
Wi-Fi name changed after reset
A factory reset restores the SSID and password shown on the label or starts an open setup network. Join that network, complete setup and then recreate the desired Wi-Fi name. Devices will not reconnect automatically until the previous SSID and password are restored exactly.
Secure the router after recovery
- Create a unique administrator password.
- Use WPA2 or WPA3 and a strong Wi-Fi password.
- Install official firmware for the exact model.
- Disable remote administration and WPS when unnecessary.
- Review default guest, cloud and sharing settings.
- Create a fresh protected backup after the network is stable.
